Whether or not GoldenEye on the N64 still stands up after thirteen years is one question I’m not asking, but there’s little doubt that it was one of the first games of its kind and certainly paved the way for Halo, Call Of Duty and all the other multiplayer first-person shooters that have come since. However, since developers Rare are now owned by Microsoft, there’s been little chance of the game seeing a re-release, either on the XBox 360 or a Nintendo console.
Until now, that is: Activision have put together a new GoldenEye 007 game exclusive to the Wii. It remains to be seen exactly what the game will bring to the table, with rights tied up across a variety of companies. Not least is the fact that this game will feature a Daniel Craig likeness of James Bond rather than Pierce Brosnan.
The game boasts multiplayer functionality with over 40 characters, including Scaramanga, Jaws and Oddjob, and you can take a look at the trailer below. Whether it will stand the test of time is another question, but I think we can guarantee what a lot of people who had an N64 in 1997 will know what they’re picking up this Christmas.
GoldenEye 007 will be released exclusively on Nintendo Wii in late 2010.
