Trailervision: Mortaaaal Kombaaaat

We’re still unsure just what this Mortal Kombat video is, but oh my, does it look awesome.

There’s long been talk of a reboot to the Mortal Kombat movie franchise which spawned two films in the mid-90s: you may remember that there was also a live-action TV series. The video below, hosted on the MortalKombatRebirth youtube channel (and the only video available on it) seems to indicate that said reboot will be coming soon, and even has some fairly big names attached (you might recognise Michael Jai White from Spawn or Jeri Ryan, who’ll never not be known as Seven-Of-Nine in Star Trek: Voyager.)

That said, there’s little news other than this clip: while speculation is always fun, the two biggest rumours currently floating around are that

  • This is a pitch-reel made as a sample and test for a movie/TV reboot (the talent involved makes this seem pretty likely);
  • or, we’ve got ourselves a viral ad for a new game. This one is all up in the air, since Midway Games (the original studios behind the series) are currently filing for bankruptcy, but that doesn’t mean that some other company might use the opportunity to seize the rights and refresh the game series entirely.

With E3 next week, I wouldn’t be surprised if an announcement either way comes soon.

Updated June 10th: Amongst a variety of sources (amongst them, Seven Of Nine Jeri Ryan’s own Twitter, it transpires that this is indeed a pitch reel made to show Warner Bros what a gritty reboot could look like. It looks pretty good to me, and the sooner they make it, the better.
