It’s official, or as official as anything gets in Hollywood: Variety are reporting that Chris Evans has officially accepted the role as Captain America in the upcoming movie coming soon from Marvel Studios. And nope, we’re not talking about the ginger guy that used to be on Channel 4 a lot (sorry for alienating readers from the other side of the Atlantic…)
Evans is no stranger to comic-book movies and superheroics, and has even previously played Marvel character Johnny Storm (the Human Torch) in both Fantastic Four and Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer (not to mention a telekinetic bad-ass in last year’s Push.) Evans’ casting comes after last week’s announcement that Hugo Weaving will be playing villain the Red Skull, and he now joins part of the Marvel trinity that will be headlining an eventual Avengers movie alongside Robert Downey Jr as Tony Stark/Iron Man and Chris Hemsworth as Thor.
It’s unclear just what direction the Joe Johnston-directed Captain America: The First Avenger will take, and how much of the story will involve spandex and superpowers and how much will cover Cap’s wartime origins, or for that matter whether it’ll feature traditional Cap or the French-hating Steve Rogers from the Ultimate Universe. Either way, Evans has his work cut out for him, single-handedly carrying a film of this weight. Not to mention, the shield looks pretty heavy too.

Well I guess it’s better than some of the names that were floating around. Duke from GI Joe for one, the guy looks the part but has zero talent.
Can’t wait for these movies. I have high hopes for the Captain America movie (I really think Chris Evans can pull it off, just watch Sunshine and you’ll understand). Also Jason Statham as Union Jack would be awesome. God these are going to be some great movies.
